The Board

Our National Board is represented by the following members who have backgrounds in 11 different professional occupations:

 

Sharyn Long

Chairman

Sharyn is an Accredited SMSF Specialist AuditorTM (SSAudTM) and a SMSF Specialist AdvisorTM(SSATM) and has been a director of SPAA since December 2005.

Sharyn was appointed Chair of SPAA in April 2009. With a strong commitment to lifting professional standards within the industry, Sharyn has been instrumental in the development of the SMSF Specialised Auditor designation and Code of Professional Conduct.

She also chairs the recently formed Professional Standards Committee and is an active
member on the National Conference Committee.

Sharyn has spend most of her professional career specialising in superannuation and founded Sharyn Long Chartered Accountants in WA in 1993 and established the firm’s Melbourne office in 2002.

Her expertise extends beyond self managed superannuation funds with her firm also servicing to some of Australia larger corporate, industry and government funds.
She is a leading practitioner on technical superannuation matters and a highly regarded speaker on tax and audit issues.

Sharyn has worked with the AUASB on the development of GS009 on Auditing Self Managed Superannuation Funds released in October 2008 and is a member of the recently formed ATO Approved Auditors Working Group.

Sharyn also holds a Certificate of Superannuation Management (ASFA) and is a fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia.

Graeme Colley

Vice Chairman, Director 

Graeme is an Accredited SMSF Specialist AdvisorTM(SSATM)and Superannuation Strategy Manager for ING. The role involves providing technical advice on superannuation to the advisor network of ING companies throughout Australia, such as Retireinvest, Tandem and Super Concepts.

Graeme is part of the Technical and Research Team of ING. He previously worked in a number of government organisations including the ISC and the ATO.

Graeme has over 20 years experience in the superannuation industry and has been involved in many of the changes that have taken place to the government’s superannuation policy during that time. This has included formulating policy, developing legislation and providing high level technical advice. His most recent role was responsible for the co-ordination of superannuation litigation within the ATO.

Graeme has co-authored a number of books and publications on superannuation. He is also involved in writing material for the ASFA Diploma of Superannuation Management, Masters of Commerce at the University of Western Sydney and a number of other courses. He also has experience with a number of leading fund managers and consultants.

Peter Fry

Director and Chair of Conference Committee

Peter Fry an Accredited SMSF Specialist AdvisorTM (SSATM) is principal of Peter Fry & Associates, Chartered Accountants and Fry Financial Services, Financial Planners in Melbourne’s East, providing services to clients in accounting, taxation, superannuation and financial planning with a specialty (and passion) in Self Managed Superannuation Funds.

Peter has more than 30 years’ experience in the accounting profession and has earned a solid reputation for his specialist business services and management advice and development of wealth creation strategies, particularly relating to self managed super funds including structuring and their administration, which then coordinates with financial planning, risk management and estate planning and has been involved in litigation support and family law matters.

Peter also holds a CFP® (Certified Financial Planner®)designation and is actively involved in financial planning aspects of client affairs.

Peter is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries.

Peter enjoys tennis, water skiing and motor sport.

Nicholas Aston

Director and Chair of Finance Committee

Nicholas Aston an Accredited SMSF Specialist AdvisorTM (SSATM) is Managing Partner of one of New South Wales’ leading chartered accountants – brentnallnsw.

With more than 20 years’ experience in the accounting industry, looking after all aspects of clients’ taxation and financial affairs, he is well respected for his management and development of wealth creation strategies.

At present, he advises clients in the areas of estate and superannuation planning and has most recently developed the strategic superannuation arm of brentnallnsw – the Family Superannuation Specialists. Its core activities assist clients take control of their finances, create outstanding retirement solutions and develop and manage wealth creation strategies for the family.

Married with three children, he enjoys playing golf, tennis and watching motor sport.

Warrick Hanley

Director

Warrick is the Principal of FinFore Wealth Solutions, a boutique financial planning firm that provides advice in the areas of Strategic Financial Planning, Estate Planning and Investment Portfolio Construction.

 With 12 years experience in the financial services industry and 5 of those specialising in advice to SMSF Trustees, Warrick has developed comprehensive skills in the delivery of strategic advice to wealthy clients and Self  Managed Superannuation Fund Trustees.

 He regularly presents to Accountants, Solicitors and other Financial Planners on technical strategies and aspects of Self Managed Superannuation Funds in various forums.

 He is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and an accredited SMSF Specialist Advisor™ (SSA).

 Warrick is a husband and father of 3 beautiful children. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with my family, boating and golfing

Peter Hogan

Director and Chair of Audit Committee

The SPAA board is representative of most of the States and Territories of Australia and has experience and expertise in all areas of SMSF advice, including accounting, taxation, audit, financial planning, stock broking, risk management, estate planning and business succession planning.

Peter has been involved in the financial services industry for over 20 years, working in government, accounting, actuarial and financial services companies. He specialises in advising on tax and superannuation issues generally, assisting trustees of SMSF's with complex strategy and regulatory requirements.

Peter is particularly sought after in relation to Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) issues. He is a regular speaker at the Financial Planning Association Annual Conference; as well as Public Industry Forums and conferences.

He was formerly Head of Technical Services at Colonial First State for over six years, prior to which he was Head of Technical Services at Macquarie Bank for five years.

Peter holds a Bachelor of Laws from Sydney University, has completed the Diploma of Financial Planning and is an Accredited SMSF Specialist AdvisorTM (SSATM).

Peter Burgess

Director and Chair of Education Committee

 

Peter Burgess has over 20 years of superannuation industry experience and is an accredited SMSF Specialist AdvisorTM (SSATM). Prior to Peter’s current appointment as General Manager Superannuation Services with independent financial planning group Kingston Capital, Peter held a senior superannuation management position with Adelaide based company, Australian Executor Trustees.

Peter’s views on technical superannuation issues are highly regarded in the industry and he is a regular public speaker at industry conferences. Peter has also published a number of articles and accredited training material on the subject of SMSFs and is an experienced SMSF lecturer. Peter is an adjunct lecturer with the University of Adelaide and is chair of SPAA’s education committee.

Peter has a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Adelaide, an Economics Degree and post graduate qualifications in superannuation management and finance.

Andrea Slattery

Chief Executive Officer

Andrea is the Chief executive Officer of the SMSF Professionals’ Association of Australia Limited (SPAA) and is an Accredited SMSF Specialist AdvisorTM (SSATM). Her passion for the industry and its self-regulation is one of the reasons for SPAA's inception. She is the face and voice of the association, responsible for overseeing membership and its wide range of services.

An accomplished accountant, financial planner and lecturer at the University of South Australia in the School of International Business, Andrea Slattery has established herself as an authority in the field of SMSFs. She has worked in the financial industry over the past 16 years, and prior to this position, her consultancy involved advising firms on the implementation of legislative changes and the development of SMSF advisory businesses as part of their practice.

A wife to Paul and a mother of four beautiful sons, Andrea is also a member of CPA Australia and its SA Public Practice Committee.
